We’re only looking at earthquakes with a magnitude 6 or above, unless they result in damage and/or deaths, The maximum intensities are shown on the (MMI) Mercalli intensity scale and are gathered from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) ShakeMap data. The major shakes took place in Ecuador, Italy, Taiwan and Indonesia this year. The strongest shaker was in Papua New Guinea but there was no loss of life. The most deaths were recorded in Ecuador on April 16 where 676 souls were lost. For the first time since 2008, there were no magnitude 8 or larger shakers recorded anywhere.
